Your heart rate is supposed to change with every breath. When it stops, that's the problem.

Heart Coherence is built around a specific, measurable physiological state, not a metaphor. Here's what heart rate variability and coherence actually are, why 6 breaths a minute is the number the app targets, and what the vagus nerve has to do with any of it.

A healthy heart doesn't beat at a fixed, metronomic rate. The interval between beats naturally lengthens and shortens in response to breathing, mood, and effort, a property called heart rate variability (HRV). Low HRV, a heart that beats almost mechanically regardless of what's happening, is associated in the research literature with chronic stress and poorer cardiovascular and nervous-system regulation. High, well-organized HRV is associated with better regulation and resilience. This isn't a fringe measurement; it's a standard tool in cardiology and psychophysiology research.

"Coherence" describes a specific pattern within that variability: when heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure rhythms synchronize into a smooth, sine-wave-like oscillation instead of an erratic one. HeartMath Institute, a research organization that has studied this pattern since the 1990s, found that this synchronized state is reliably triggered by two things together: slow, paced breathing and a genuinely felt positive emotion, gratitude or appreciation in particular, not breathing alone.

The heart isn't just responding to the nervous system. Research on heart-brain interaction suggests the signal runs both ways.

Why 6 breaths per minute specifically

Every person has a resonance frequency, a breathing pace at which their particular cardiovascular rhythms line up most efficiently. For most adults that pace lands close to 6 breaths per minute, about half the typical resting rate. This isn't a Heart Coherence-specific claim; resonance-frequency breathing at roughly this pace is a well-studied technique in HRV biofeedback research, used in clinical settings for stress and anxiety work well before it became a wellness-app feature. Breathing this slowly, in through a count and out through a longer count, is also what activates the vagus nerve, the main nerve connecting brain and body that, when stimulated, shifts the nervous system out of fight-or-flight and into rest-and-digest.

What the session actually asks you to do

Follow a visual pace: inhale as a shape expands, exhale as it contracts, no counting required. Underneath the simple visual, the pacing is doing real physiological work, nudging your breathing toward your own resonance frequency rather than an arbitrary rhythm. The positive-emotion component, HeartMath's second ingredient, is why the sessions pair breath pacing with a genuine feeling, not breath alone.
